Yabo Yablonsky Residency:
The Management Committee is pleased to announce that Derry Playhouse Writers has been awarded a grant from Awards for All to bring Yabo Yablonsky to the Derry Playhouse from Hollywood, USA for two months to teach a Master Class in Script Writing and direct his play, 'Jews Without Money' featuring local talent.
'Jews Without Money' is set in post-WWII New York City, specifically Amboy Street, in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. More of a compost heap than a melting pot, it was a neighbourhood populated largely by poor Jewish immigrants, street toughs and gangsters. The audience's guide, Heshey Janofsky, revisits the ghosts of his past--drunks, junkies, whores, refugees from the Holocaust and Russian Revolution, crooked cops, disillusioned teachers, and most importantly, members of his gang 'The Cavaliers'
Yablonsky is an award winning film and stage director and author of numerous film, stage and television scripts. He has also published two novels.
The film script for which Yablonsky is best known is 'Escape to Victory' directed by John Houston staring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Max von Sadow and includes numerous soccer greats including Pelé and Bobby Moore. Yablonsky is Writer/Director of the film 'Jordi' that was awarded the San Geordio Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
The Script Writing Master Class held its first session on 9 October with 26 people attending and 'Jews Without Money' is in rehearsal and will open at the Derry Playhouse on Thursday, November 22, 2001 at 8:00pm.
